my Mom, and I have been voting absentee since the 2020 presidential election. That’s easiest for me because I no longer go to the polls on the day of voting. That is except for yesterday.
Here’s what happened, on the first, my ballot gotspoiled. My mom told me that she was going to go in the morning of voting to get a new ballot. Then her ballot got spoiled as well.
so, on the morning of voting she found out that I had to go in person to vote. She went to her precinct and voted, and then she came back to my house so I can get ready for the day so I could vote.
My polling location is .2 miles away from my house. It says that it takes 3 to 5 minutes to walk there. I knew that I would take us longer than that! we left my house about 3:30 and we got to the school 20 minutes later.
we have figured out that I cannot walk with someone while I am on the sidewalk. With uneven pavement, I have to concentrate on what I am seeing. I go fast and wait at the end of the block for my mom. That’s what I did yesterday and it was the first time in 17 years that I had been around my neighborhood on foot, or on wheels.
I couldn’t believe that it had been 17 years and I had never been down those streets before. The houses look really cute and they are well manicured!
I was nervous going to my poll in person. I am nervous every time I leave the house while I am in my wheelchair. It’s not comfortable because the outside world at large is definitely not accessible and that hurts. But we got it done!
I had to take my spoiled absentee ballot to the poll. I had to formally surrender my ballot, and then they miracle and then gave me another one. My mom filled it out at the accessible table that Sean used to do for me when he was in high school.
So, she helped me fill out my ballot and I voted. When she put my ballot into the machine, I was number 460. That was the highest I have ever been since I have voted there. She got me a sticker which I haven’t had in years because I won absentee. I put it on my phone.
Then it was time to head back to my house. I was happy that I voted, but I was super tired afterward. I am always tired after I leave the house and yesterday was no different. I couldn’t write about that yesterday because I was spent. I think next time, we will make it a point to be careful with our ballots because that was a little bit difficult, but thank God the weather was really good!
