10.9.17 “Jendinitis”

I received two calls last Friday. The first call was from Kristen, Dr. Frush’s assistant, and she told me that the ultrasound showed that everything with my MCL was okay but I have tendinitis in my knee and she wants me to make an appointment with Dr. Moore.  He works with Dr. Frush and is a non-surgical sports medicine doctor.   I was shocked that there is still something wrong with my knee over a year after my original injury and over five months after surgery. But I felt better that Dr. Moore works closely with Dr. Frush.

The second call was  Audrey from Dr. Frush’s office.   She was calling to schedule my appointment with Dr. Moore. I see him this coming Friday. Audrey spoke of the possibility of a Cortisone shot or a steroid shot to reduce the inflammation  but Dr. Moore would know more once he sees me. He works out of the same office as Dr. Frush.

I told all of this to Brad and Larry as they got me onto the table. Brad started out by putting me in traction and that relieved some of the pain temporarily.  He bent my knee and rubbed it out.  Brad pressed the places where it hurt and I think that concurred with tendinitis. I did an abbreviated version of my leg lifts and then I pushed my heel down to the table as  my knee was bent and his hand was on my hamstring to feel the muscle activation.

Then, Larry came over and we got ready for stands. Standing was difficult on Monday. Of my four downs, I only *BINK*ed once.   My knee kind of hurt as I was trying to stand. Larry asked how my, “Jendinitis”  was doing and I said it kind of hurt my knee to stand and I stood one more time and for a brief, shining moment I was able to stand fully but it was not even long enough for a *BINK.*

My mom came over as he hooked up the stim and he said that the tendinitis  might be a good thing. I couldn’t imagine how my pain could be good but he explained that  inflammation comes from movement and the fact that I can move my knee is a step in the right direction. The inflammation is a setback and I hope to get that figured out on Friday.   So then, maybe I can get back to Barwis!

10.13.17 Tenex

I had an appointment on Friday with Dr. Moore. I was told that he works closely with Dr. Frush but he is a non surgical sports medicine doctor.   My knee was kind of hurting when I saw him. When he came in, I noticed he was really tall and he spoke freely with my mom and me both.   He pressed my knee in all the spots where it hurt and he talked about a few options to help it to feel better.

He talked about another Cortisone shot to help and if that didn’t work to do a procedure called Tenex.   If that didn’t work either, he talked about a third procedure but that is not covered by insurance. He told me it would be about $1000. I don’t have $1000 for a procedure so I’m hoping that the first two options work out.   He pulled up the images of my ultrasound and took a look at them.

He decided that we would do a Cortisone shot that day, see how it does, make a return appointment in about four weeks, and then see what we’ll do from there.   The nurse came back in to get things ready for the Cortisone shot. I had two previous Cortisone shots from Dr. Frush  with one not making my knee feel better before surgery and one making my knee feel a little better after surgery.

After the nurse readied the needle for the shot, she left and brought back in the ultrasound machine. Dr. Moore came back in and we kind of played musical chairs where to situate me in the room so this could work.  Dr. Moore is a couple of years younger than me so when he put my chair, in the corner, facing it, he laughed at my Blair Witch Project reference.

After all of  equipment was set up, I commented that this is a little bit more involved of a Cortisone shot than the ones I received from Dr. Frush.   The nurse sprayed numbing solution on the medial side of my knee and then glopped a whole bunch of ointment on for the ultrasound machine. Dr. Moore pushed the ultrasound wand onto my knee  and looked at the monitor that was over my shoulder. My mom said that it looked like the ocean and I think those scans look more like a pork loin.

Dr. Moore put the needle in my knee and looked at the monitor. He moved the needle around a bunch while it was inside my knee.   I had a needle moving around in my knee. That should hurt. But, it didn’t because it was numbed.   After he found a good spot, he injected the Cortisone into my knee.

He asked how my knee felt and at that moment it felt good. It felt completely numb. He told me we may have found the spot where it would do the  most good for my knee but told me to make a return appointment for four weeks to see. I left, and my return appointment is set for November 10th.   As my mom and I were driving home, my knee started to hurt.

I can’t believe that it has been over a year since my knee was injured and it still hurts! I told Dr. Moore that I told Dr. Frush   that he could cut my leg off but Dr. Moore agreed with him that that was not a good idea. Since my latest Cortisone shot, my knee moves from a dull ache too a sharp, stabbing pain.  I know that is not normal but I hope to get some more answers at my next appointment.

Dr. Moore said the Tenex is where they  make a small incision to put a needle in  and then he said something about scraping my tendon and then I kind of stopped listening. That sounded gross! But if it’s going to help,  I’m not going to argue. I just hope this procedure works so I don’t have to do the procedure that is not covered by insurance.

10.16.17 Tweaked OR Scrape

Monday morning, my knee felt like it was “tweaked.”   Obviously, it did not feel good! I felt like something was pinched on the medial side of my knee. I just learned that “medial”  refers to the inside of my knee. I didn’t like how this felt and it greatly concerned me! Once I got to ATI, I told Brad and Larry that it felt tweaked or pinched.

Brad decided that we would not stand and instead really rubbed my knee out well. I told him about what Dr. Moore said. I told him the cortisone didn’t really make my  knee feel any better and my next appointment is November 10th which probably will schedule the Tenex.   I can’t believe that my knee is STILL  hurting!

I told him that Dr. Moore said he was going to scrape my tendon and that it kind of freaked me out!  Dr. Moore said that they would make an incision and put the needle in my knee to scrape the tendon. Gross! Brad asked me which one because there were three tendons on the medial side of my knee. He told me the three and it completely sounded like a different language.   I kind of shrugged my shoulders and had him repeat my three options. I told him that the first one sounded familiar.

I usually am so interested in finding out the technical terms for things but I think I am a little exasperated with how much of my knee is hurt,  STILL!   We did my leg left and  Brad had me push my leg out and in. After we did that, Larry came over and did the ultrasound for me.

I thought I was done after that but then Larry hooked me up with ice and stim.   I liked that my knee felt better for this short time! Brad told me that he will talk to Nicole to see how things will look for continuing physical therapy because we aren’t making gains so much.   Neurologically, that’s pretty much impossible.  I asked him if I would transition back to Barwis because they have a Neuro doc.there now.  He wasn’t sure of the answer and I  reminded him of that Dr. Frush told me not to go back there until my knee didn’t hurt. It still hurts!   What are my going to do?!

10.19.17 Cruel OR “Hit it!”

As soon as I woke up, I am mediately thought of David Bowie’s song in the movie Labyrinth,“Within You.”  I thought about which one of my knees was being more cruel. My right one, for hurting but my left one, for feeling completely normal! I’ve decided that it is pretty cruel  for me to know exactly what a healthy knee feels like!    I’m having a really hard time getting over the fact that it’s been over a year that my knee has not been okay.

I worked with Luba when I get to ATI.  She asked me what kind of sensation I felt it in my legs compared to sensations I have in my hands. She rubbed her finger on my right hand and I thought about it for a while. I took a deep breath and  told her 3. If feeling in my hands is it 10, then feeling in my legs is a 3.   I told her that my bathroom floor is cold still and that was a good thing because I am barefoot in my bathroom and my bathroom floor did not start getting cold until I started working out at Barwis so sensation is still there.

I thought about my knee hurting so badly, if my sensation is lessened in my legs, maybe it hurts a whole lot more, I just can’t feel it! Again, that’s pretty cruel!   Luba’s  verbal catalyst for me to raise my left leg was, “Hit it!”  That made me chuckle a bit to myself. I remember that I had a friend in high school who used to say, “Hit it” all of the time  referring to driving somewhere, like, “Hit the road.”

Luba did the ultrasound and Larry hooked me up with ice and stim.  The combination of those three things made my knee feel really good but just for that time. When I was almost home after physical therapy, my knee began to ache again.

10.23.17 Maize OR Dwayne

Larry and Brad helped me onto the table and I did all my normal exercises with Brad. He rubbed my knee out, I did my leg lifts and  the heel slides with the big green rubber band .  I did not do my stands because my knee hurt too much.   In our conversation, I found out that Brad has a cat!   He got the cat just before his wedding and its name is, “Maize.”   He just told me that his wife would get rid of him before she got rid of the cat!

He told me that after Larry did the ultrasound, he would tape me.  Larry did my ultrasound and it felt really good! Afterward,  he hooked me up with ice and stim and that combination really helped my need to feel a lot better even if it was fleeting!  As Larry was hooking me up for the stim, another client finished and was leaving.   I didn’t know why she was at ATI but she told Larry that he didn’t look like he was a, “Larry.”   She said that he looked more like a, “Dwayne”  because he was so “muscle-y.”  Well, he IS! We all laughed and as Matt left that night, he made sure to say bye to “Dwayne.”

When my time was up, Brad taped my knee and I really liked that because it felt better even if just for a little while! I am still waiting for my next appointment with Dr. Moore and the Tenex to more clearly figure out my future at ATI and possibly transitioning back to Barwis.  Dr. Frush said not to go back to Barwis until my knee stopped hurting and  it’s so frustrating that  it STILL hurts!

10.27.17 Casual Friday OR Shake OR Red Hot Chili Peppers

I had to change my ATI appointment from Thursday to Friday because I had Sean’s parent-teacher conferences on Thursday. So Friday at ATI, I had Greg. He was in  a T-shirt and jeans. I had never seen him and jeans before and he told me it was because  it was PT month, it was casual Friday. He had an ATI T-shirt on. I didn’t know that October  was physical therapy month! My knee hurt, as always, and Greg started with ultrasound.

After the ultrasound, he rubbed my knee a little bit and then grabbed my ankle and pulled to alleviate pressure in my knee. After he did this, he shook my leg a little bit.  That really felt good! I told him that I like the shake and he sang a little of the KC and the Sunshine Band song and danced a little bit while we both laughed!

After that, who grabbed a bolster and stretched my leg out simulating the leg lifts but I didn’t have to work. I really appreciated that because my knee hurt and I was tired.   He hooked me up with ice and stim.  My mom and I had a great conversation with Emily (the new physical therapist).   Well, it WAS  Great until I learned that she went to MSU. I told her that I thought I liked her but now…  we all left and she told me that she was dating a good guy who went to UofM. I told her that is WHY he was a good guy.

Greg came back out when the stim. was finished and taped my knee.   When he was finished, he looked at his tape job and told me that I look like I have the Red Hot Chili Peppers symbol on my knee. He held my ankle up so I could see it as I laid there flat. I agreed with him!

10.30.17 Game of Thrones (I AM a spoiler if you haven’t seen it yet)

Luba told me that all of the therapists were dressing up as the Game of Thrones cast for Halloween.   I got excited because I just finished binging the show so it’s all fresh in my mind! She told me who she and everyone else was going to be and I got really excited to see them! When I got to ATI, Larry, Brad, Greg, Matt, and Emily were the only ones  still there  and the horse was gone but Larry sent me this picture:

Emily is a wolf, Matt is Khal Drogo, Mira is Arya Stark, Greg is “Littlefinger,” Luba is Cersei, Brad is Tormund Giantbane (the red-headed wildling), and Nicole is a dragon. Larry did not dress up because he only arrived there  at 4:30. I wanted him to be Ned Stark because I love Ned Stark even though he’s dead.  Before we got there, I showed my mom pictures of who everyone was going to be.

Once we got in, it was excellent! My mom took pictures of Brad, Greg, Emily, and Matt:

She even took a picture of Larry, even though he wasn’t dressed up!:

It was so much fun to see them all! There is a contest between the ATI’s in Michigan and I hope that Plymouth wins!  Brad rubbed my knee,  did my ultrasound, I did my leg lifts, my heel slides, and then I got ice and stim.   It’s the normal routine but yet, my knee always ends up hurting again after I leave ATI. Brad talked about  me just having a few more appointments before I see Dr. Moore and then we will discuss if I will continue with physical therapy because I am not making many gains.  This stinks!!!  I guess we’ll see.

11.3.17 Fun Friday OR 21 Pilots

I worked with Greg on Friday and it started with my ultrasound. Emily did my ultrasound and my knee started to feel better! When Greg came over, he told me that it was a “Fun Friday” and danced  around a little bit before he came over to the table. He rubbed my knee and stretch my leg out.

He told me that his wedding was moved up a couple of months and I was excited for him! Emily told me that it was for a reason but he couldn’t tell us but she knew that his fiancé was not pregnant! We all laughed!  21 Pilots came on the radio and Greg told us that he really liked the song and started dancing and singing! It was really fun!

He told me that he recently went to a 21 Pilots concert and it was a bunch of young people like the girl on the table next to me. I told him that I am too old to go to concerts now!  (we are the same age)  I’m not sure if it’s that I’m too old or too disabled, but; either way, I just can’t go. The last concert I went to was probably three years ago? We saw The Script, Gavin DeGraw, and Train. It was outside at DTE Energy Music Theater and we had good seats because we sat in the disabled section.

I went with my cousinnT Shannon, (on the left) and it was so much fun! Greg hooked me up with ice and stim  and I asked him when my next appointment was. Turns out, this was my last appointment at ATI. I have my appointment with Dr. Moore next Friday to discuss the Tenex procedure and my mom reminded me that Brad said we would wait and see what the doctor says.

I am STILL in so much pain but neurologically I  I am not or cannot make any gains.   I was sad that I’m not coming back but I am looking forward to seeing Dr. Moore again because I want my knee to stop hurting!   I guess I will have to wait and see.

A Throb and a Pinch

Having had MS for 16 years now, I have  reluctantly started wearing compression stockings all of the time about a year ago.   I couldn’t stand to wear them in the months before my surgery because it was too warm. But without them, I get elephant legs because I do not have sufficient blood flow.   They are extremely difficult to put on but I do not know that first hand because my Mom puts them on for me.

The last pair I had died; they just stretched out over time so when I ordered my second pair, I ordered black ones instead of the beige ones so I didn’t feel like an old lady wearing them.  So currently, I just have one pair of stockings.   I order them from a medical supply store and insurance does not cover them so at $90 a pop, I just have one. Obviously, they need to get washed occasionally.   OK, it’s kind of often.

Last night, before my mom left and before I went to bed, she pulled them off and told me she would wash them and bring them back in the morning. I really didn’t think it would make a difference being without them overnight. I was wrong.  I got into bed a little after midnight and was excited to sleep in because of daylight savings time. But, that was not the case.

I was awakened a little bit after five to a throb and a pinch in my legs. The throb was in both of my legs. From my thighs all the way to my toes. The pinch was in the medial side of my right knee. Exactly where the tendonitis is.   It’s been over a year since my knee has been in pain. Excruciating pain. The pain that wakes me up from sleep. If it wasn’t my meniscus, it’s my medial tendons.

I couldn’t wait for my Mom to come over this morning with my stockings to make my legs feel better!   Putting my stockings on helped with the throb and I hope that  pinch is remedied soon when I see Dr. Moore.  It’s only now, after my injury, that I realize how many parts to the knee there are because so many of them have hurt and still hurt.

“I Believe In You”

***CLICK THE RED “this commercial” TO VIEW 3 DIFFERENT COMMERCIALS***

(it’s in the second commercial that you will understand why the title of this post is what it is.   I’m going to think of that every time I put this chapstick on now!) 😄😄😄

I saw my first Burt’s bees commercial today.  I was catching up on my shows today (AFTER Good Morning Football OF COURSE!) OnDemand and was not able to skip the commercials so I really wasn’t paying attention until I heard that it was a Burt’s Bees commercial.  I had never seen one before but saw the display at Target or something a few years back and  thought  I’d try it out because it was all-natural. That is the  only kind of chapstick I use now!

I changed from the Peppermint to  Pomegranate for a while and then to Açai Berry when I started working out at Barwis.  I miss Barwis Methods so much that it hurts! Almost as much as my knee.   My açai berry chapstick ran out and because I was not going to Barwis immediately after my knee was injured, I could not bring myself to wear it. The smell reminded me so much of being at Barwis that I changed over  two Pink Grapefruit when I was at ATI. I immediately got on the YouTube app on my phone to find the commercial  after I saw it so I could post it on my blog.   I didn’t find it but I saw this commercial.

I continued viewing the commercials, then I saw this commercial, its kinda long but I dug it!   I don’t leave my house very much since my surgery and now, I am not going to ATI anymore until my appointment with Dr. Moore. Now that the weather has gotten colder, I put my chapstick in my coat pocket with my gum (Blue 5 OF COURSE! Thanks Adam!) so I don’t lose or forget them. I would always wear chapstick every day and would reapply often, but now I don’t so much.

Watching multiple commercials about Burt’s Bees, made me kind of sad.   I decided to stop watching them so lastly, I saw this commercial  and I thought it was pretty informative! You learn something new every day! I can’t wait until I am able to wear Açai Berry chapstick again  because that would mean that I am back at Barwis FINALLY  and my knee no longer hurts! Wishful thinking!
